LOTS OF WALK IN THE FOREST

  The campus of Kajaani is surrounded by the forest where we enjoy walking when the weather is fine! We love climbing up to the former Kajaani ski-jump because once we are up there we have a 360-degree view.

ICE FISHING

During a friday afternoon, with 3 french exchange students, we went to the lake behind the campus to do some ice fishing. It was a pleasant and unforgettable experience even we didn't fish a fish. 
Firstly we had to cut a hole in the ice to reach the water and then we just patiently waited for the fish to bite the hook. I must admit I did not catch many!
The weather was bad, there were many wind, snow and it was very cold but it was a very experience and it's one of the things to do when we are in Finland. 



NORTHERN LIGHTS
Since our arrival in Finland, we had expected to see the northern lights. Despite the fact that we were in northern Finland, we were very lucky because we saw northern lights from the campus a February's thursday night.

THE HISTORY      Finland under the domination of Sweden and Russia Finland belonged to Sweden for 600 years, from the Middle-Ages until the early 19th century. Several wars between Sweden and Russia were held in Finland during this period in order to take control of the country. In 1809, all of Finland came under the reign of Russia when Russia was victorious over Sweden. Finland was still autonomous but the king, however, was the Russian Tsar. The independence of Finland Finland broke away from Russia when the Finnish parliament approved the Declaration of Independence on December 6 th , 1917. Finland became an independent country then. A year later, in 1918, a civil war broke out in Finland between the Reds, who represented the workers and the whites, composed of the middle-class and the farmers. A week-end in Oulu

I have visited the city of Oulu during one week-end at the end of January with 10 others exchanges students. Oulu is located about two hours from Kajaani by train, on the seaside. It is the most populous city in Northern Finland and the fourth most populous city in the country. There are 203 762 inhabitants.     We rented an apartment in the city centre next to the train station (through Airbnb) so it was very easy to visit. We were able to admire the sea which was completely frozen and we saw a hockey match in Oulu arena. Oulu Hockey team is the best team in the country ( it's like the Ligue 1 for the football in France). On sunday evening, we ate in a typical restaurant and so I could test the reindeer and it was very nice.   It was a really good week-end, it felt like holidays and it was cool to see something else than Kajaani.
